Cobtree Open - Club Report
by Amanda Clements

Another year has flown past and once again it is hard to believe just how much we have packed into each month!

After the Christmas break Cobtree met at the Hazlitt theatre for the annual panto 'Peter Pan which proved to be a great success, however next time members will need ear muffs if sitting in the vicinity of our resident 'fog horn' Zanna!!

Moving into February we did a charity car wash at the Malta Inn car park, we managed to raise a pleasing £180.00.

March saw the Cattle training day held at our farm, the weather was great unlike last year, and the animals were on their best behaviour, a fun filled day was had by all learning lots of new husbandry and show skills.

The rally day was then the next major event on Cobtree's calendar. Many clubs came to the Museum of Kent life for a full day packed of various competitions from cake decorating to wellie throwing! The sheep dog trials were the highlight as many who competed ended up wet and covered in mud as the course took the 'human dogs' through a rather unpleasant paddling pool full of freezing cold water and made them army crawl under various obstacles!

The day was then finished off with the tug of war, which proved to be very amusing due to the rather unusual selection of teams! No guesses as to who was going to win!!

Bringing us into May was the traditional May Day Celebrations held by the Museum of Kent Life, including the crowning of the Cobtree May Queen, Morris and maypole dancing, storytelling and live music. It was an entertaining event especially seeing our members walking around in rather attractive floral numbers with flowers in their hair, certainly no wellies were seen that day!

Towards the end of the month we then attended Living Land, this was a great opportunity for our new calves to get used to the trailer and a busy atmosphere before the Kent Show.

The south of England show then crept up on us and it was time to take the calves and lambs to their first show of the year. Up on the farm at some un-earthly hour the sleepy members were trying to push the animals onto the trailer, like usual the cows decided they would rather eat and look around the yard rather than be loaded!! That morning was definitely not for the faint hearted!

The Kent show was then our next major event: preparations for the Kent show had been taking place all week with all animals being clipped and washed, all our kit was ready to be loaded and the tents were being set up at the camp site.

Thursday evening, everyone had arrived at the campsite, the cows were settled down and the show had begun! Everyone crowded under the huge marquee that the club had just brought and Kim and Anne took their places at the cooker!!!

Martin's caravan had ything you could ever possibly need inside arrived at the campsite and was branded with his own custom made flags saying 'martins magical caravan'!! The weekend was now complete!

Cobtree had a very successful show and many laughs on the way, including certain individuals having grass fights and then setting Hannah's hay fever off!

We then attended the Edenbridge and Oxted show, again a great time was had although fellow campers such as the army cadets didn't seem to share our partying spirit!

We took Alfie our little purebred Sussex along to the show and he got reserve champion, not bad for his first show! The rest of the cattle and sheep also got very respectable places and lots of strokes on the way by members of public!

Two weeks after Edenbridge and Oxted we had our Club show, a much-anticipated day where we all compete against one another. Early in the morning members were fetching there animals from the fields and scrubbing them up to be judged in a total of ten classes. The weather held out all day and our animals shone like shillings.

The annual parent class was then held to end the day, this was rather amusing seeing some of our parents being dragged around the ring, some being lapped by fellow exhibitors and probably the highlight of it all was when Bluebell decided to lay down and have a munch on the grass much to its parent leader's embarrassment!

A great day was had by all and it was a great way to end a successful showing season for Cobtree Young farmers.
