Westlands - Annual Club Report
by Daniel Pavelin

This last year for Westlands has been full of fun and tiring events, as usual.

September 2004 saw the arrival of what seemed like thousands of little people ( year 7's)
which after a bit of hard work and some bad weather, dwindled down to about 30.
( phew!)

We focussed that month on training the new members up to spec. and finding out what they were interested in.

Encouraged by our rabbit achievements at the Kent Show last year, we entered some of the rabbits into shows across the county and managed to get 'best of breed' and several challenge certificates.

Westlands put 3 teams into the public speaking competition - first time ever! - and one of our speakers came 1st, followed by a 3rd and 4th place. Our candidate for Junior Member of the Year also won and went on to represent Kent.

The Fatstock shows at Ardingly, Ashford and Maidstone were our next challenge and we came away with several prizes and alas, then had to say goodbye to our large cattle.

2005 arrived and so did our South Devon cross calves. The rest of our babies soon followed.

We attended Rally Day at Cobtree in April and had a fun day entering all the competitions. Two of our members were roped into playing netball and the team won through to the National Finals.

Then it was onto the major agricultural shows - Heathfield and the South of England - and panic set in as the Kent Show was just around the corner!
We came 3rd overall at the Kent Show, but we had a lot of fun doing it which is the main thing. The showing year was rounded up at Edenbridge and Oxted.

Somehow or other, we have managed to fit in visits to Mr Hamlyn's dairy farm, training days, and ten pin bowling to name but a few.

One of the important events of the year has been the Living Land Day at Detling, this gives us the chance to see future young farmers in the making.
With funds from KCAS, for which we are extremely grateful, we now have new fencing, water troughs and a heated pig weaning unit.

Our thanks to the Kent Show team, Philippa and Cathy for their efforts during the year and to Katie for being such a helpful Chairman!

We have had a busy year and roll on 2005/2006!
