Oldborough Manor - Club Report
by Mike Handley and Lorraine Dent

Our highlights from the Year

Christmas started very early for Oldborough Manor Young Farmers with the preparation and planning for our annual Nativity Play in 2004. On a cold December day the young farmers put on there acting wellies and joined forces with Asquith Nursery to perform this dramatic masterpiece. A standing ovation was received by the many visitors including the deputy mayor and a special landing strip was made for Rudolf as Santa arrived to enjoy the festivities.

With January not being much warmer we decided to turn our attentions to winter sports and we all went to Gillingham ice bowl for an ice skating disco, although some of the youngsters spent more time on the bottom's than on their skates.

As the new leaves were growing on the trees in Feburary and March the young farmers were well in to there preparation for the new showing season, three new calves arrived Scooby, Buffy and Bridget who were almost as playful and as noisy as the new young farmers

Lambing Time came in April with the sound of new born lambs echoing through the farm, our annual lambing day brought in hundreds of visitors to get a look at our lambing sheds and learn from our young farmers. An extremely attention seeking ewe waited to our busiest point of the day, with local press present to give birth and gave visitors a memory they would never forget.

The adrenalin was running and anticipation was high as our first show arrived in May - The Heathfield Show. We gave the main lines a run for there money as we showed against them with our pedigree Charolais cattle, we were all complimented by the top showing breeders on our performance.

As we sat down to rest after the Heathfield show we had to get straight back up again and start getting ready for the South of England show in June . With the cattle well practiced and the young farmers dizzy from walking in circles the showing went well and excellent time was had by all.

In July the biggest event of the year was upon us, the Kent County Show, with an amazing start in the pedigree beef class (Champion and reserve Champion) it was good to know for the first few hours of the show at least we were winning on points, but with the other young farmer super powers doing an excellent performance we finished and honorable fifth place overall.

With all of the animals either safely resting back home on the farm some of the young farmers went on an August trip to the Edenbridge and Oxsted show, it was a nice trip to chill out and take a look around the show and watch and talk to other farmers who were still hard at work showing.

With our membership growing in the club for the second year running and a new partnership being formed between the school and the farm, the young farmers have gone from strength to strength over the last year, and the way things are looking I'm sure next year will be our best year yet!

It's probably way to early for you all to be thinking about Christmas but our young farmers are all ready well in the planning stage for our Christmas Nativity & Carol service in December 2005, so come and join us in the barn for what looks to be our best event yet! It's Saturday 17th December and the farm will be open 12.00p.m. - 4.00pm with entertainment going on throughout. Be prepared to be shocked and amazed at the arrival of our special guest!!!

Wishing you all a happy and successful young farming year ahead!
