President's Report November 2005
by Nick Leggat, County President

I would like to thank you for re electing me as your President at the November General Meeting. It is an honour to serve such a vibrant and enthusiastic group of "Young Farmers".

The week after the AGM, Katie was re-elected as County Chairman, sub committees appointed their new Chairman and although some were a little thin on the ground the year but started with its usual eagerness.

Our Young farmers collected several prizes despite very strong competition. They received plenty of praise for their animals and their showing ability at the fat stock shows, well done.

Our 60th County Ball was held as a joint venture with Kent County Agricultural Society at the Kent County Showground, Detling. Various ex-members remembered County Chairmen from yesteryear, plus more recent ones and gave an interesting and humorous account. Unfortunately, the speaker system was so bad that few people could hear what so being said. Some people did try to get closer, others remained oblivious. In spite of this a good time was had by most with good food, wine and dancing. Although, it became rather cold by the finish.

Once again we have to thank the Museum OF Kent Life for allowing us to hold our Spring Rally at Cobtree. Its high standard was again maintained and everyone had a very enjoyable day.

Three and a half thousand junior children came to the Detling Showground for the second Living Land Day. Quite a few seemed to miss the cows being milked and the ones that did find us were more interested in the other stuff that came out of nervous cows! Other than Milk! The show Committee was very impressed with the Young Farmers efforts, and the children all seemed to have a very enjoyable day.

Once again the Young Farmers put on a splendid display at the Kent Show with cattle groomed and polished to perfection and the sheep whiter than white. A tremendous amount of hard work goes into getting these animals to perform in public, especially as only a few weeks before some of them were fairly wild.

We must thank R.A.B.I. for organising and encouraging entries to the Christmas card competition and congratulate Karen Silk for winning it. All it needs now is for everyone to buy and send our cards.

Attending clubs Harvest Suppers is always enjoyable and this year was no exception with Ashford and Maidstone putting on excellent meals. Prepared served and enjoyed by all present. It is a chance to see the members plus catch with old friends.

To see Maidstone re-formed and doing so well is a great pleasure as this was my club many moons ago.

Thanks must go to Phillipa for making sure existing clubs prosper and grow, new clubs are brought on board, regulations are adhered to and everyone encouraged to achieve their ambition. Also, to Cathy for keeping everyone informed and in order, and Toyin for stepping in at short notice to keep the accounts up to date.

We must encourage clubs to interact, help each other and share their knowledge, experience and successes.

The year has been a great pleasure for me as I hope it has for all the members. Let's look forward to next year and make it even better. Well done to you all.
