Meopham YFC 2006 Report
by Meopham YFC

December, 2006

Well, what a start to the year for Meopham & District Young Farmers, with appointment of a new committee. At our AGM, which was held in October 2005, Chris Woods was elected as the new Club Chairman. Some of his Committee members having already held positions within the club meant he had a strong team behind him. So, down to business, the rest of the month it was decided to build upon team work which was completed by team building exercises and silly games which were organised by the club leaders. With a long year ahead with lots of important things, we tried to get a good start.

November was soon arriving so we decidede to have a bit of fun with Ten Pin Bowling, which always goes down well!!! We also tried to see how intelligent our members were with a quiz run by Katie and Leigh. We also had a curry night, which wasn't the only hot thing we did!! We also held a bonfire party for our members and friends which went with a big bang! December came around and as you can imagine it was a busy month. We tried to test the clubs co-ordination with an excellent night of eye toy games, followed by a lads night (which is where the male members of the club run the evening for the ladies) It's amazing how many car parts they know! Then, we had our Christmas dinner held at our sponsors public house (the Amazon & Tiger), then to the end of the month we held our own British Grand Prix with front room Formula 1. December also saw our main fund raiser which is our sleigh pull around Meopham & Vigo.

After seeing in the New Year, January saw the girls take their revenge on the lads with the ladies night. It was difficult to guess the different names of make-up utensils, but strangely some of us lads did!!!! We also designed a new club poster to encourage new members to the club. We also did some silly activities to keep up morales

as the weather was bad. Feburary started with question time, another quiz just to keep the brain warm. More silly games this time organised by Haggis, and Public Speaking practice with the forth coming County Competiitions . We also managed to get a couple of tables together for the County Ball , which was at Detling Showgrond. I can safely say that a very enjoyable and memorable evening was had by all, especially our Chairman Chris Woods!!!!

Moving on to March, we held a inter club darts tournament, mind you there were not too many bulleye's and not even a single 180! We also went Ten Pin Bowling again to get ready for the county competition, and we also had recruitment drive managing to secure a couple of new members. There was a spring in everyone's step in April. One of our members took us for a guided tour of their sheep farm, giving us a demonstration in how to tail and castrate a lamb. We attended the county's rally day at Cobtree YFC/Museum of Kent Life with some of our members picking up records of achievement. We also started to do up the Meopham School Outdoor Chicken Unit which was going to be an ongoing project. We also held a fund raiser in the form of a ‘stars in their eyes' disco, with special guest The Village People, Bob Marley, the Beatles, and the Pink.

In May there was the National AGM which was held in Blackpool , with a weekend of non stop partying and having fun. There were a couple of sore heads on the journey home, which for some took a little bit longer to wear off than others. The Living Land Day was also this month and some of our members attended to help with stewarding . May also saw the start of the show season with two of our members taking their own animals to the Heathfield Agricultural Show. Kevin and his brother took pedigree Herefords and a Selection of their commercial cattle. A good time was had, taking Breed Champion and Reserve Breed in the Hereford classes and his young bull taking Reserve Champion Native Bull. Carrying on into June, we had a car treasure hunt, we also did some fund raising at the Harvel Fun Run. Kevin & Antony took some of Kevin's Hereford to the Sounth of England Show. He also took some Shire horses to the show and got a lot of rosettes. We also invited the local Gun Club to an evening of bat and trap which after a good evening of close competition; I can safely say we won.

In July, we had a stall at the Harvel Village Fete which helped us raise money for the forth coming Kent County Show. Then it was show time, and we had a different image for this years show. I can safely say that an enjoyable three days was had by all and we won rosettes in all classes we entered. Pay Young entered the Teacher Leaders class with Haggis and Nicola Deain a pantomime cow outfit and came first. Mind you I think the people were the wrong way around as it would have been a cracking Belgium Blue!

August saw us play rounders with the school and we even held a BBQ. We also went to a fruit farm for a farm visit and learnt about free range pigs and apples. It also saw the Edenbridge & Oxted show where three of our members taking their own livestock in the shape of Herefords and Shire Horses. They had a really successful show with Anthony taking Reserve Breed Champion with his Hereford heifer and Kevin and Simon taking Reserve Shire Champion.

In September we revisited the chicken run, we tidied up the area so that it looked respectable. A few of our members went to the stubble party where everyone had a really good time and view of Ryan, who decided to do an impromptu streak across the stage. We also had a tasting evening run by Eve Hart. We were also mesmerised by a very interesting magician going by the name Mark Lemezma.

We also did some fund raising at the local ploughing match.

In Summary we have had a very eventful year at Meopham, with a lot of activities. We can't wait to see what the New Year brings…………..
