Astor of Hever's final big bash
by Emma Lifford

31st July 2005

For many Astor young farmers, the farm's "final big bash" would be the last time they stepped foot in the farm before the keys were handed over. The party was both a happy and sad event, but a night I will always remember.

Mr. Eade managed the BBQ

The evening was kicked off to a good start when some of the local community, ex-members and other young farmers clubs joined Astor young farmers for a BBQ. There was also many things to look at, including photos spanning the last thirty years, and a video of last year's Kent County Show.

We had a great time, and brought along all the astor memorabilia that we could get our hands on!

"There was everything from top food and drink, to music to football" exclaimed Astor of Hever YFC member, Adam.

Mr. Eade was the auction-master. His David-Dickinson-style tan, and various catch phrases, made him very suitable for the role!

Next on the agenda was the auction. There was a wide range of things you could bid for, old signs and watches, and even the club's old "stockmans cup" All the money raised was getting sent to foreign countries to buy cattle for farmers living in poverty. These cattle could then be bred and sold, helping those poor farmers work their way out of poverty, as well as provide food to those in need.

Tom bid for Astor of Hever School Farm signs... they're a collectors piece now! An absolute bobby dazzler!     Dom won this antique stop watch. It's unique in that it doesn't work... what a rare specimen! Could be a duffer...

This was followed by the giving out of certificates and presants for Chris and Mr Eade. This proved to be a very amusing time. The twins "Tom and Ollie" were awarded cetificates for confusing the most people, and Clive Hall was recognised as the farm's "computer geek of the year"!

Some Young Farmers with their prizes and certificates

Emma won an award for being the most clumsy person on the farm.. ever. Ollie won an award for being a confusing twin!!

The evening was then finished off by photos and football, well, football / rugby on the field. By this time it was pitch black! Everyone ended up bundling Chris in the dark, and Nia and Hannah both had a great time getting Chris back for all the times he teased them over the years!

Chris and Mr. Eade are awarded their prizes

As the main events of evening came to a close, some young farmers went home to a cosy warm bed whilst others partied on for a bit longer.

The senior members lark about in a field!

Thank you to everyone who made this evening possible, I don't think any of us will ever forget it.

One last club photo!

The club chairperson, Hannah Rubbie-Todd, thanks all those who attended the event and showed their support for the farm over recent months, as well as on the night of the bash.
