Daisy
the cow dances to an audience in Maidstone The newly formed North Downs YFC ran their first event last Saturday... inviting the people of Maidstone to come and see Daisy the dancing cow!
Daisy, a pure-bred Holstein Friesian (oh, and a pantomime cow), is the club's first animal. She trotted up and down Week Street, entertaining local children by dancing to various street artists, as well as her favourite song 'I've got a combine harvester'. Whilst a few children found the sight a little disturbing, most laughed and gave Daisy a pat on the back. For all her hard work, Daisy (aka club members Emma Lifford and Carrieanne Turner) was treated to a McDonalds lunch!
The publicity event marked the beginning of North Downs YFC's bid to try and raise £4000 over the next year, to help the club establish itself and take members to the Kent County Show. After a generous donation of £1920 by the Kent County Agricultural Society (KCAS), this means only £2080 is left to go! When speaking to reporters from the KM, Stephen Paine (the club's treasurer) explained "The club is about helping young people who don't normally work in the countryside learn about the county we live in. It's about having a good time as well. Anyone can be involved, regardless of their background, because you don't have to be a farmer to be a young farmer! "We are in the process of organising our first events. We have plans for a Christmas dinner, and we've been invited to a pig training day later in the month." Daisy's coverage in the local media follows an interview with CTR radio about the closure of the Astor of Hever school farm, and the opening of a new open club. Whilst losing the farm was a disappointment, Daisy has proved that the nothing can hold North Downs young farmers back!
