April fools revelation averts mutiny in the agricultural community...
by Stephen Paine

Monday, 22nd May 2006

It all began on April 1st, when County Chair Chris Bowley solemnly reported back news he had received from NFYFC central office. "The YFC", he said (a tear in his eye) "will be merging with the scouts".

The shock move was announced as a measure for tackling declining membership of both the YFC and Scouts across other parts of the country. Not a lot would change, though. Young farmers would have more opportunities to engage in outdoor pursuits, and scouts would have the chance to work with agricultural machinery.

Chris confessed the only drawback would be the widespread adoption of neckerchiefs and an army style chant, commonly referred to as the Dib Dib Dob Dob chant, to big up the club leader and each other before closing meetings.

The YFC community responded with outrage. North Downs YFC organised a petition to protest against what they described as "an unnecessary infringement of their members' rights". Rumours began circulating that the Lord Lieutenant of Kent had gone on hunger strike over the proposals. Even worse still, Gill Collins (KCAS guru) had caught wind, and was beginning plans to bring the NFYFC exec crashing down over the project - possibly using an elite force of Maidstone Young Farmers to storm national HQ.

It was only in May's exec meeting that Chris (via County Secretary Cathy Sherwood, because he was too poorly to make it himself) announced the proposals had been.. a tad untrue. Followed very quickly by "APRIL FOOLS!"

So there we have it, the biggest crisis in YFC history… stirred up and averted by our County Chairman. And they say we don't have any excitement in Kent!

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHRIS BOWLEY (ASHFORD YOUNG FARMER AND COUNTY CHAIR) & MIRIAM INSKIP (ASHFORD) FOR THEIR HAPPY WEDDING LAST WEEKEND!
