North Downs' after-show party
by Stephen Paine

31st July, 2006

Fireworks, go-kart, bouncy castle, BBQ, music, disco lights... it could only be one thing -  North Downs YFC's first ever after-show party!

Celebrating the successful end to their first County Show as a new club, the YFC threw a party for everyone in East Farleigh (near Maidstone). To start with, awards won at the show were given out. These were followed by "silly awards", commending all manner of daft shenanigans committed by club members throughout the weekend. Finally, Philippa awarded first aid certificates to Nia and Stephen, from North Downs, and Shelia Flight (from Axton Chase School).

Thank-yous of wine and flowers were given to the following for all their help over the last few months:

  • Nick Leggat - for the loan of three calves for the County Show
  • Andrew Leggat - for kindly transporting our calves to the showground
  • Matt from Ash YFC - for the loan of ten lambs for the Show
  • John from Princess Christian's farm - for the loan of two porkers and a calf
  • Sheila Flight and Axton Chase - for lending us spare show equipment!
  • Sini Diamond - for kindly donating 30 white show coats to the club
  • Emma's grandad - for being our personal courier service!
  • Sam's mum - for general support, and making our pig-area flag
  • Zoe's Mum - for helping with food for the campsite

Special prizes were also secretly organised and given to Nia, Charlotte and Stephen to say thank you for organising the club's show effort this year.

Earlier in the day, a team of members drove to East Farleigh to set up the field. As well as putting up the marquee and bunting, this involved setting up a tricky go-kart course. Carl and Sam came up with a challenging course making the most of the driver's cunning, speed and agility!

Clive and Matt dealt with the bouncy castle, which had been kindly given to the party by Mr. Scott (a friendly teacher at the Astor of Hever School in Maidstone) free of charge!

In the meanwhile, Adam went about setting up the disco lights and electricity, whilst Stephen and Nia made the field safe for launching fireworks.

About 40 people turned up throughout the night, including several members from other local clubs, and everyone seemed to have a great time! The party finally finished at about 1am, when Clive pulled the plug on the bouncy castle!
