North Downs and Axton Chase combine to build Hilton Hen home!
by Stephen Paine (North Downs' Events & Social Officer)

26th November, 2006

As with all building projects of this magnitude, the new Hilton Hen Home (a state of the art free-range chicken pen with sophisticated security systems at Axton Chase Spectrum Centre) was several months behind schedule. But like Wembley, the wait was well worth it - even though the project isn't quite complete yet!

The site was about 30m by 10m. At regular intervals, the volunteers from North Downs had to drive in 9ft (and somethings 12ft) posts deep into the ground. Fortunately, several posts had already been put in to make the framework of the original pen, and this saved a huge amount of time.

It became apparent half-way round that, despite the regular sugar and caffene boosts from Sheila's coffee and cakes, our team didn't possess the physical strength required to go all the way around (wusses!)

Instead, we divided the original site into two, and completed one half of the original plans. This included re-wiring the electrical fence, and fitting new straining wire that would be tight enough to stop foxes crawling under or over the fence.

North Downs plan to return at a later date to complete the chicken pen, and the get cracking on other projects around the farm!
