Young
farmers conquer their fears at Maidstone's Night Hike 22nd March, 2006 Maidstone YFC kindly invited North Downs YFC along to their impressive night hike last week, and both clubs had a fantastic time conquering mud, hills and loose dogs - all in pitch black.
Both clubs met at the Bell in Bredhurst, a village pub in the middle of nowhere, to hear the plans. Everyone spit into 5 teams, which were each given a map - a proper map with contour lines and everything! Mark, from Maidstone YFC (and the Night Hike's co-ordinator) pointed us in the right direction, and pushed us out the door. The first team, made up of Matt, Sam, Emma, Gina and Dominic, managed to disappear completely. Mark searched the two hour-long course several times before he discovered they had, infact, taking a wrong turning and gone off the edge of their maps! The second North Downs' team meanwhile stumbled across a travellers' site and, with it, several loose and angry looking dogs. We got past that particular checkpoint quite quickly! Our third and final team, led by club chairman Carl, was delayed waiting for club president Nia to arrive back from university a Essex. In the end, they left without her - and managed to complete the course before she got to the pub. In fact, her and Ollie (from Essex YFC) had not gone to the pub at all - they had hidden in a bush near the end of the course, and jumped out on Carl's team as they walked by - causing some very girly screams from that team!
Everyone from North Downs had a brilliant time, and we would like to thank Mark, Verity, Fred, and all of Maidstone YFC for organising the night and inviting us along. |
