Dung Day raises more than eyebrows in Maidstone
by Stephen Paine, Events and Social Officer

11th April, 2007

Just how easy is it to sell poo door to door, one might ask. Well, the young farmers at North Downs succeeded in raising an astronomical amount for their County Show fund by doing just that!

Some of the door-to-door dung delivery team!

It all began Tuesday afternoon, when Steve, Emma and Nia headed out to Park Wood to pick up a trailer from Trident Trailers. We found a nice one with tall mesh sides - perfect for the storage of our dung.

Emma fills bags!

The previous week, members had already leafleted our target neighbourhood (the roads around the old Astor of Hever school farm site) letting residents know about dung day. By Tuesday afternoon, the day before delivery, we already had 30 pre-orders put in. We knew we'd need a big trailer!

Sam fills the wheel-barrows, whilst Emma dealt with the bags. They couldn't fill up quickly enough!

The manure was kindly donated by Nick Leggat, who even used a digger to load the trailer for us. Every member helped by bringing along their own wheel-barrows and shovels. We even found an abandoned "Workers in the road" sign, which we put in front of the trailer with some traffic cones to let drivers know we were wheeling barrows of dung back and forth.

Kelly shows how it's done!

By the end of the event, we had raised an amazing £86 for our Kent Show funds. This money will go towards buying essential show equipment, and paying off travel and administrative costs. The proceeds of Dung Day, combined with our recent successful sponsorship drive, mean that North Downs are well on our way to meeting our fundraising target for this Summer.

Amazingly, the day after brought one more new surprise - a resident nearby who heard about Dung Day decided he wanted to replant His allotments, phoned, and put in an order for another SEVENTY barrows! Seventy bags is almost the equivalent of a trailer, or 2 tons of manure. Nice!

Cleaning the trailer at the end of the day. What's that Carl, you're using Flash: Ocean Minerals?

We would like to thank the residents of Ashdown Close, Oakwood Road and Bowermount Road for kindly supporting our club by buying manure. We're also extremely grateful for Nick Leggat's generosity with the provision of dung, and Bridge Boat Service in East Farleigh for kindly paying the hire charge on our trailer. Thank you also to Richard Searle for giving up his day to tow the trailer, and to Emma's Dad for coming along to help out.

Chairman Carl and Vice-chair Rosie unwind down by the river after working hard all day!
