What have our clubs been getting up to the last few months?!
We held club's stock judging competition before Christmas. Graham Husk organised this and each member had the chance to go into a pen of four lambs and grade them in order of how "fat" they were. We all then had to give our reasons to Graham who chose the winner, the person who had the correct order (or was closest to the correct order!) and who gave the best reasons.
In December we had our annual "thank you supper" where all the members prepared a buffet for all the people who have helped the club over the last year. The club cups were also presented to the members by Rob Warnock, an advisory committe member.
We also had our Christmas Dinner for the members the week before Christmas. Each member was responsible for cooking and bringing one part of the Christmas dinner and we frantically re-heated / dished up in the kitchen at Hamwkinge Village Hall. We managed to serve a full Christmas dinner for about 20 of us!
In January members went to Ashford YFC's "Just Missed it" post new year party. We also went toboganning in Folkestone and went on a night hike where members set off in pairs on a specified route ten minutes apart. The pair that got to the end first won. Wellies and torches were essential!!!
Coming up for February / March we will be visiting a dairy farm, doing the club's beef stock judging competition and going on a farm visit to see some lambs being born! More pictures of those meetings will follow...
Since the club AGM in October, Canterbury YFC has had a brilliant turn out at club meetings, gaining many new younger members. The most memorable meeting must be the Halloween walk, which took place on an extremely stormy wet and windy night, but all members braved the storms and participated! Volunteers from VSU came and took a Life Saving course, which was very educational and we all enjoyed the club Christmas Meal at the Rose and Crown in Stelling Minnis. The Dinner Dance back in November was a huge success, with all profits going to the RABI. We'd like to thank all the clubs who attended and supported us, it was a very eventful night! Hopefully 2009 will be even better.
Meopham YFC carried out it’s annual fundraiser this year around the lanes and streets of Meopham. This is carried out by our resident yellow truck and his trusty sleigh. The sleigh this year was upgraded by some LED lights which helped along with the rope lights. A collection of trusty Elves accompany the sleigh through the streets with loud Christmas music being played. The elves visit households to wish them a Merry Christmas and ask them if they would like to make a donation to our club. The other main character who plays a key role is of course Meopham YFC’s exclusive access to the REAL Father Christmas, he is called by the elves to doors where there are children, Father Christmas gives them a gift and tells them he will return on Christmas Eve with the rest of their presents. Overall the three nights of teamwork was a success with a record amount of money raised for the club which will be used throughout the year towards club events!!! Happy New Year!!

North Downs YFC, based in Maidstone, had a quiet Christmas and New Year. In November, our new committee met for the first time to organise a trip to Sittingbourne Dogs. This was the first time that many of us had been dog racing, and we had a great time (Samantha even went home with more money than she brought with her!) Later in the month, we organised a trip to Canterbury's Planet Lazer. With the traditional chivalry one would expect from young farmers, the boys ganged up on the girls and won two games! In our most recent event, we exchanged secret santa gifts at Gillingham Ice Bowl. Following a night of cuts and bruises on the ice rink, it seemed wise to swap pressies in the safety of a local drive-thru McDonalds! The new committee are now putting together a programme for 2009. Contact Clive Hall if you are interested in becoming a member! |
